THE STANDING COMMITTEE ON INDIGENOUS AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS INVITES THE PUBLIC TO SUBMIT COMMENTS AND WRITTEN BRIEFS FOR ITS STUDY ON DEFAULT PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

Ottawa, March 22, 2017 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs invites the public to submit comments and written briefs for the Committee’s study of the Default Prevention and Management Policy of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), which includes Third-Party Management. This policy applies to funding agreements signed between Indigenous communities or organizations and INAC, and sets out the conditions under which the department may intervene to mitigate financial risks. The Committee’s study objectives include:

  • issues and challenges that affect financial management in First Nations communities;
  • INAC’s current policy on default management and prevention, including the role of third-party managers;
  • existing federal programs that support financial management in First Nations communities; and
  • alternative models for default management, with a focus on innovative solutions and promising practices.

Comments and written briefs should address the issue(s) mentioned above, but could also include recommendations on how to improve default prevention and management in Indigenous communities. These submissions should be provided no later than Friday, April 14, 2017 and should not exceed 3,000 words. Those interested in submitting a brief or a comment can do so online though the Committee’s website or by contacting the Committee Clerk at INAN@Parl.gc.ca. Once received, submissions will be translated into both official languages and posted on the Committee’s website.
