The Standing Committee on National Defence met in a video recording session at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, the Hon. Peter Kent, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: James Bezan, Corneliu Chisu, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Hon. Peter Kent, Élaine Michaud, Joyce Murray, Rick Norlock and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Robert Chisholm for Tarik Brahmi and Ted Hsu for Joyce Murray.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Katherine Simonds, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Communications Security Establishment: Greta Bossenmaier, Chief. Department of National Defence: John Forster, Deputy Minister; John Turner, Associate Deputy Minister; Capt(N) S.A. Virgin, Deputy Commander, Canadian Special Operations Forces Command.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 23, 2015, the Committee commenced consideration of the Order in Council appointment of John Forster to the position of Deputy Minister of National Defence, referred to the Committee on Friday, February 20, 2015.
 

John Forster made a statement and answered questions.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair present a report to the House that the Committee has examined the qualifications and competence of John Forster to the position of Deputy Minister of National Defence and finds him competent to perform the duties of his position.

 

At 4:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:02 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 23, 2015, the Committee commenced consideration of the Order in Council appointment of John Turner to the position of Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence, referred to the Committee on Friday, February 20, 2015.
 

John Turner made a statement and answered questions.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair present a report to the House that the Committee has examined the qualifications and competence of John Turner to the position of Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence and finds him competent to perform the duties of his position.

 

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 23, 2015, the Committee commenced consideration of the Order in Council appointment of Greta Bossenmaier to the position of Chief of the Communications Security Establishment, referred to the Committee on Friday, February 20, 2015.
 

Greta Bossenmaier made a statement and answered questions.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair present a report to the House that the Committee has examined the qualifications and competence of Greta Bossenmaier to the position of Chief of the Communications Security Establishment and finds her competent to perform the duties of her position.

 

At 5:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of the defence of North America.
 

Capt(N) S.A. Virgin made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
