The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Tyrone Benskin, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Pierre Dionne Labelle, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Stella Ambler for Royal Galipeau and Parm Gill for Corneliu Chisu.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages; Sylvain Giguère, Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Communications Branch; Carsten Quell, Director, Policy and Research, Policy and Communications Branch. Edmonton Public School Board: Valérie Leclair, Program Coordinator for French Language Programs, Support for Staff and Students; Marie Commance-Shulko, French Immersion Consultant , Support for Staff and Students. As an individual: Joseph Dicks, Director, Second Language Research Institute of Canada (L2RIC) at the University of New Brunswick.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, November 18, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of second official language immersion programs in Canada.
 

Graham Fraser made statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Valérie Leclair, by videoconference from Edmonton, Alberta and Joseph Dicks, by videoconference from Fredericton, New Brunswick made statements and, with Marie Commande-Shulko, answered questions.

 

At 5:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
