The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Anne-Marie Day, Jacques Gourde, Claude Gravelle, Chungsen Leung, Jamie Nicholls and Lise St-Denis.

 

Acting Members present: Mark Adler for John Williamson.

 

Associate Members present: Yvon Godin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Shelly Glover, P.C., M.P., Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Jean-Pierre C. Gauthier, Director General, Official Languages Branch; Hubert Lussier, Assistant Deputy Minister, Citizenship and Heritage.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, the Committee commenced its study of managing and implementing the Roadmap for Canada's Official Languages 2013-2018: Education, Immigration, Communities.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with Hubert Lussier, answered questions.

 

Claude Gravelle gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee study the availability of French language television and programming outside Quebec with respect to adhering to the language, cultural and education rights of Francophone communities and report back to the House within 45 days.

 

Jamie Nicholls gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee begin, by May 2015, a study to determine whether CBC/Radio-Canada has the financial, human and real property resources to adequately meet its obligations under the Official Languages Act and specific aspects of the Broadcasting Act; that it place special emphasis on official language minority communities, and that the study’s meetings be televised.

 

At 4:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
