The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in camera at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 228, The Valour Building, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Pierre Dionne Labelle for Nycole Turmel and Kyle Seeback for Corneliu Chisu.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Holke David, Procedural Clerk.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 6, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of the economic situation of Canada's minority linguistic communities.
 

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

 

At 12:02 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:10 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 12:19 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:20 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Jacques Gourde moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Joyce Bateman, Joe Daniel, Jacques Gourde, Kyle Seeback, John Williamson — 5; NAYS: Pierre Dionne Labelle, Yvon Godin, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis — 4.

 

At 12:21 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:22 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee continue its consideration of the draft report for its study on the economic situation of Canada’s minority linguistic communities on Thursday, November 27, Tuesday, December 2, and Thursday, December 4, 2014.

 

It was agreed, — That the meetings of Tuesday, December 9 and Thursday, December 11, 2014, be cancelled.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration to appear before the Committee at its first scheduled meeting after the Christmas adjournment to discuss francophone immigration and all the initiatives taken by the Minister’s department to meet its obligations under Part VII of the Official Languages Act during a televised meeting at least one (1) hour in length.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages to appear before the Committee after the Christmas adjournment to discuss the implementation of the Roadmap and to respond to stakeholders’ concerns regarding the management of the Roadmap during a televised meeting at least one (1) hour in length.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet to plan its future business following the appearances of the two (2) ministers.

 

At 12:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
