The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis, Nycole Turmel and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Joan Crockatt for Corneliu Chisu and Rick Norlock for Joyce Bateman.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Holke David, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages; Mary Donaghy, Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Communications Branch; Ghislaine Saikaley, Assistant Commissioner, Compliance Assurance Branch; Johane Tremblay, Director and General Counsel, Legal Affairs Branch.

 

Yvon Godin gave notice of the following motions:

That the Committee invite the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration to appear before the end of December 2014 to discuss francophone immigration and all the initiatives taken by his department to respect part VII of the Official Languages Act during a two (2) hour televised meeting.

That the Committee invite the Minister of National Defence before the end of December 2014 to discuss respect for official languages in the Canadian Forces during a two (2) hour televised meeting.

That the Committee invite the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages before the end of December 2014 to discuss the implementation of the Roadmap and to answer concerns expressed by stakeholders over the management of the Roadmap during a two (2) hour televised meeting.

That the Committee invite the Minister of Public Works and Government Services before December 2014 to discuss all initiatives taken by Public Works to respect the Official Languages Act in the context of minority media during a two (2) hour televised meeting.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f), the Committee commenced consideration of the 2013-2014 Annual Report of the Commissioner of Official Languages, referred to the Committee on Tuesday, October 7, 2014.
 

Graham Fraser made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:09 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the 2013-2014 Annual Report of the Commissioner of Official Languages. Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 

At 12:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
