The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 8:45 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Raymond Côté for Manon Perreault.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick: Armand Caron, President, Conseil des gouverneurs. City of Moncton: Jacques Dubé, City Manager. New Brunswick Federation of Labour: Patrick Colford, President.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Lise St-Denis gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee undertakes a study on the impact of budget cuts on Radio-Canada’s programming for rural and urban francophone communities across the country.

The study should identify the impact of revenue changes on Radio-Canada’s ability to fulfill its mandate; consider the impact of the changes to Radio-Canada’s operations on the vitality of francophone culture as well as on the accessibility, quality and variety of French-language programs; and submit recommendations to the government on how the public broadcaster could be supported.

Furthermore, it is requested that the Minister of Canadian Heritage be called as a witness as part of this study.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 6, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of the economic situation of Canada's minority linguistic communities.
 

Armand Caron, Jacques Dubé and Patrick Colford made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:32 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:34 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Jacques Gourde moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera .

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Joyce Bateman, Corneliu Chisu, Joe Daniel, Jacques Gourde, John Williamson — 5; NAYS: Raymond Côté, Yvon Godin, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis — 4.
