The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Pierre Nantel for Manon Perreault.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Chloé O'Shaughnessy, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: Hubert T. Lacroix, President and Chief Executive Officer; Patricia Pleszcynska, Executive Director, Regional Services and ICI Radio-Canada Première; Shelagh Kinch, Managing Director, English Services in Quebec.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Yvon Godin gave notice of the following motions:

That the Committee invite the Minister of Heritage before June 12th, 2014 to appear in front of committee to explain why there is a delay in the payment of grants allocated to official languages groups by her department.

That the Committee invite the Minister of Defence before June 12th, 2014 to discuss respect for official languages in the Canadian Forces during a two-hour televised session.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of CBC/Radio-Canada's programming following recent budget cuts.
 

Hubert T. Lacroix made a statement and, with Patricia Pleszcynska and Shelagh Kinch answered questions.

 

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
