Tuesday, February 17, 2015

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 306, The Valour Building, the Vice-Chair, Marc Garneau, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Lois Brown, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Hélène Laverdière, Romeo Saganash, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Bernard Trottier.

Acting Members present: Élaine Michaud for Paul Dewar.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst ; Brian Hermon, Analyst.

Witnesses: United Nations World Food Programme: Jane Pearce, Country Director. World Vision Canada: Martin Fischer, Director of Policy; Bart Witteveen, Director, Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees: Emmanuel Gignac, Coordinator, Northern Iraq.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's Response to the Violence, Religious Persecution and Dislocation Caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Jane Pearce, Martin Fischer, Bart Witteveen and Emmanuel Gignac, by videoconference from Erbil, Iraq, made statements and answered questions.

At 12:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:36 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

At 12:52 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:55 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That, on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, the Committee meet informally with a parliamentary delegation from Turkey.

It was agreed, — That, on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, the Committee meet with representatives of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
