The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in camera at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Gordon Brown, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Ray Boughen, Gordon Brown, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Matthew Dubé, Rick Dykstra, Jim Hillyer, Chungsen Leung, Irene Mathyssen, Pierre Nantel, Blake Richards and Terence Young.

 

Acting Members present: Randall Garrison for François Lapointe.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Holke David, Procedural Clerk.

 

Appearing: Hon. Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport).

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Lane MacAdam, Director, Sport Excellence, Sport Canada. Canadian Olympic Committee: Marcel Aubut, President; Caroline Assalian, Chief Sport Officer; Dimitri Soudas, Executive Director. Canadian Paralympic Committee: Karen O'Neill, Chief Executive Officer; Martin Richard, Executive Director, Communications and Marketing. Own the Podium: Anne Merklinger, Chief Executive Officer; Joanne Mortimore, Director, Planning and Operations.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows, be concurred in:

1. That the Committee undertake a study of Team Canada's preparations, as well as the Government of Canada's investments, in the lead up to the Sochi Olympic and Paralympic games.

2. That on Tuesday, November 19, Thursday, November 21, Tuesday, November 26 and Thursday, November 28 2013, the Committee hear from witnesses in relation to the study of Canada's preparations for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

3. That Committee members submit their prioritized witness list, with the witnesses’ complete contact information to the Clerk no later than Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.

4. That the Committee invite the Hon. Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, to appear before the Committee on the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2013-14 and provide an update on the preparations for Canada's 150th anniversary celebrations and that these meetings be televised, if possible.

 

At 8:51 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:52 a.m., the sitting resumed in a public and televised session.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of Canada's Preparations for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.
 

The Minister and Marcel Aubut made statements and, with Lane MacAdam, Caroline Assalian and Dimitri Soudas, answered questions.

 

At 9:47 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:51 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Karen O'Neill and Anne Merklinger made statements and, with Martin Richard, answered questions.

 

At 10:47 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
