The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Tyrone Benskin, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Pierre Dionne Labelle, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Guy Lauzon, Élaine Michaud, Bernard Trottier and David Wilks.

 

Acting Members present: Rick Norlock for Corneliu Chisu.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Nicole Bourget, Assistant Deputy Minister, Sport, Major Events and Regions; Denis Racine, Executive Director, Major Events and Celebrations.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f), the Committee commenced consideration of the study of Linguistic duality during the 150th anniversary celebrations of Canadian Confederation in 2017.
 

Nicole Bourget made a statement and, with Denis Racine, answered questions.

 

At 12:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:10 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

David Wilks moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 12:46 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:47 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages to appear for two hours at a meeting to be held by December 13, 2012, in order to discuss the Official Languages Report for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2011, and that this meeting be televised.

 

At 12:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
