The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, Ed Komarnicki, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, Brad Butt, Chris Charlton, Rodger Cuzner, Joe Daniel, Ed Komarnicki, Kellie Leitch, Colin Mayes, Phil McColeman and Devinder Shory.

 

Acting Members present: Alain Giguère for Ryan Cleary and Irene Mathyssen for François Lapointe.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst; André Léonard, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Holke David, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Government of New Brunswick: Dan Mills, Director, Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification Branch, Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour. Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission: Jeff Ritter, Chief Executive Officer.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 27, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of economic opportunities for young apprentices.
 

Daniel Mills, by videoconference from Frederiction, New Brunswick and Jeff Ritter, by videoconference from Regina, Saskatchewan, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 11:51 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:43 p.m., the sitting resumed in-camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee conclude hearing witnesses on its current study titled: “Economic Opportunities for Young Apprentices”, and provide drafting instructions no later than Thursday, February 14th, 2013;

That the Committee then begin a new study titled: “Exploring Employment Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities”;

That this study focus on employment opportunities for persons with disabilities in Canada available through both existing and proposed resources offered by the private sector, as well as by federal, provincial and territorial governments;

That the Committee begin this new study at the meeting that immediately follows the issuance of drafting instructions for its current study with a briefing from departmental officials;

That at least eight (8) meetings be schedule for this study before the summer adjournment, while recognizing that business referred to this committee by the House such as Government legislation or the Main Estimates will take precedence in scheduling over this study;

And, that the review and re-drafting of the report for the Committee's current study will need to be scheduled from time to time with the objective of tabling these reports before the House rises for the summer.

 

At 12:52 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
