It was agreed, — That the Committee conclude hearing witnesses on its two current studies titled: “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations,” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low Skilled Jobs,” and provide drafting instructions by Thursday, October 4, 2012; that the Committee then begin a new study titled: “Economic Opportunities for Young Apprentices”; that this study focus on the visibility and appeal of existing apprenticeship programs to the youth of Canada, examining ways to increase the mutual recognition of apprenticeship programs between the provinces and territories of Canada to provide the maximum opportunity to young apprentices, examining ways to better connect youth with employment opportunities in the skilled trades, and reviewing existing and exploring new apprenticeship programs supported by the federal government, including improving completion rates, in areas such as the armed forces or the Red Seal program; that the Committee begin this new study on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, with a briefing from departmental officials; that five (5) meetings be scheduled for this study before the Christmas adjournment; while recognizing that business referred to this Committee by the House such as government legislation or the Supplementary Estimates B will take precedence in scheduling over this study; that annual items, such as the Centennial Flame Research Award will need to be considered this fall, and, that the review and re-drafting of the reports for the two current studies will need to be scheduled from time to time with the objective of tabling these reports before the House rises for the Christmas adjournment.
