The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Matthew Kellway, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst. House of Commons: Marie-France Renaud, Procedural Clerk.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee commence a two-day study, starting on October 2, 2012, that will look at how various Canadian jurisdictions deal with their vaccine priority lists during pandemics, particularly concerning firefighters. The role of the epidemiology of a pandemic should be shared with committee members so that they understand the differences between these jurisdictions.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee travel to CAE Healthcare in St. Laurent, Quebec, to tour the facility and attend a presentation on the facility’s best practices and contributions to the healthcare industry. The presentation on the company’s development of cutting-edge learning tools and innovative simulation solutions for the training of healthcare professionals will be informative to committee members and will permit them to view the multiple simulation platforms available to health care professionals before testing their skills on patients.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee commence a one-day study on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, during Diabetes Awareness Month, to raise awareness for the chronic condition, Juvenile Diabetes. In particular, the study should centre on the challenges children who live with this condition face, and what new technologies are being developed.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the study of technological innovation, including best practices, in health care in Canada, the proposed budget in the amount of $38,500 be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee approve the proposed schedule of 11 meetings for the study of technological innovation and best practices in Canadian health care, and that the Committee members be able to suggest other witnesses as needed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study Bill S-206, An Act respecting World Autism Awareness Day, on Tuesday, October 16, 2012.

 

At 12:11 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
