The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Parm Gill, Dany Morin, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith, Mark Strahl and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Rosane Doré Lefebvre for Anne Minh-Thu Quach.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: David-Andrés Novoa, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Health: Cheryl Grant, Director General, Strategic Policy Branch; Abby Hoffman, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch; Michelle Kovacevic, Acting Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure.

The Report of the Subcommittee, as amended, was adopted and reads as follows:

 
Your Subcommittee met on Monday, September 26, 2011, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That, on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, the Committee invite Senior Officials from Health Canada to provide a briefing on the operations and mandate of the Department;

2. That, on Monday, October 3, 2011, the Committee invite Senior Officials from the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to provide a briefing on their respective operations and mandates.
 

At 4:02 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the operations and mandate of the Department of Health.
 

Abby Hoffman and Michelle Kovacevic made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:18 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 5:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
