The Standing Committee on Health met at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room C-120, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Hon. Hedy Fry, Parm Gill, Wladyslaw Lizon, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

Acting Members present: Kirsty Duncan for Hon. Hedy Fry, Jack Harris for Libby Davies and Irene Mathyssen for Djaouida Sellah.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst ; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

Witnesses: Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Alain Beaudet, President. Public Health Agency of Canada: Kim Elmslie, Director General, Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch. Brain Canada Foundation: Inez Jabalpurwala, President and CEO; David Kaplan, Vice-Chair, Science. Neurological Health Charities Canada: Vanessa Foran, Director, Policy, Partnerships and Government Relations; Celina Rayonne-Chavannes, Director, Research Initiatives.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, October 3, 2011, the Committee commenced its study of neurological diseases.

Kim Elmslie and Alain Beaudet made statements and answered questions.

At 9:43 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:44 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Inez Jabalpurwala, David Kaplan and Vanessa Foran made statements and, with Celina Rayonne-Chavannes, answered questions.

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, P.C., M.P., Minister of Health, to appear before the Committee on the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2011-12 and the Main Estimates 2012-13 on Tuesday, March 13, 2012.

It was agreed, — That in relation to the study of neurological diseases the proposed budget in the amount of $18,950 be adopted.

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
