The Standing Committee on Health met at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Parm Gill, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

Acting Members present: Wladyslaw Lizon for John Williamson.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, December 9, 2011, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-314, An Act respecting the awareness of screening among women with dense breast tissue.
 

Patrick Brown made a statement and answered questions.

“concerning breast cancer screening, including the implications of heterogeneous or dense breast tissue for breast cancer screening, by”

“(d) working in collaboration with the provincial and territorial governments to establish national standards for systematic breast cancer screening for women who are 50 years of age or older.”

Libby Davies moved, — That Bill C-314, in Clause 2, be amended by adding after line 20 on page 3 the following:

“(d) including the need for more systematic follow up procedures, for women with heterogeneous or dense breast tissue.”

Hedy Fry moved, — That Bill C-314, in Clause 2, be amended by adding after line 20 on page 3 the following:

“(d) adopting, within the Canadian Breast Cancer Screening Initiative, a clearing house for best practices in terms of screening and detecting cancer in persons with dense breast tissue.”

Debate arose thereon.
