The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(2).

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, Joyce Bateman, Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe, Joan Crockatt, Anne-Marie Day, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Hon. Judy Sgro, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Eve Adams for Joyce Bateman, Hon. Carolyn Bennett for Hon. Judy Sgro, Jean Crowder for Sana Hassainia and Ted Opitz for Roxanne James.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Martha Butler, Analyst; Havi Echenberg, Analyst. House of Commons: Julie Lalande Prud'homme, Procedural Clerk; Philippe Méla, Legislative Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Congress of Aboriginal Peoples: Ron Swain, National Vice-Chief. As individuals: Jennifer Courchene; Rolanda Manitowabi.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Susan Truppe, it was agreed, — That Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

At 11:05 a.m., Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe took the Chair.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, April 17, 2013, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill S-2, An Act respecting family homes situated on First Nation reserves and matrimonial interests or rights in or to structures and lands situated on those reserves.
 

Ron Swain made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 11:50 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:53 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Rolanda Manitowabi and Jennifer Courchene made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:44 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:46 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That in relation to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, April 17, 2013, respecting Bill S-2, An Act respecting family homes situated on First Nation reserves and matrimonial interests or rights in or to structures and lands situated on those reserves, and notwithstanding any decision made prior, the hearings scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, 2013, and Wednesday, May 8, 2013, be divided in two panels with a duration of one hour each.

 

At 1:21 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
