The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(2).

 

Members of the Committee present: Dan Albas, Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, Anne-Marie Day, Mylène Freeman, Roxanne James, Marie-Claude Morin, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Hon. Judy Sgro, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Joy Smith for Joyce Bateman.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Holke David, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Bob Paulson, Commissioner.

 
The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Mylène Freeman, it was agreed, — That Marie-Claude Morin be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

At 3:36 p.m., Marie-Claude Morin took the Chair.

 

At 3:36 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:37 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of abuse of older women.
 

It was agreed, — That the draft report be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the report be entitled: "Abuse of Older Women".

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and Analysts be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair present the report to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee append to its report dissenting and/or supplementary opinions, immediately after the signature of the Chair, provided that they are no more than five (5) pages in length and be submitted electronically, in both official languages, to the Clerk of the Committee, no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the report.

 

It was agreed, — That a news release be prepared by the Analysts and the Clerk, in consultation with the Chair, for publication on the Committee's website and for distribution upon presentation of the report to the House.

 

At 3:53 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting resumed in a televised session.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Committee commenced its study of the role and challenges of women employed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
 

Commissioner Robert Paulson made a statement and answered questions.

 

Judy Sgro moved, — That, in relation to the study of the role and challenges of women employed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Committee schedule additional hearings and invite current and/or former female employees of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who are prepared to share their personal stories and commentary in this regard, and that the hearings be scheduled as soon as the Committee’s work plan permits.

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That debate on the motion of Judy Sgro be adjourned and deferred to the next committee meeting.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
