The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 228, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Irene Mathyssen, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Joyce Bateman, Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Mylène Freeman, Ed Holder, Roxanne James, Irene Mathyssen, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Hsu for Hon. Judy Sgro.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Edmonton Police Service: Jared Buhler, Constable, Elder Abuse Intervention Team. Ottawa Police Service: Isabelle Coady, Detective, Elder Abuse Unit. Ontario Provincial Police: Leslie Craig, Inspector, Manager, Crime Prevention Section; Isobel Fitzpatrick, Detective Sergeant, Coordinator, Eastern Regional Abuse Issues. Toronto Police Service: Patricia Fleischmann, Police Constable, Community Mobilization Unit.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee request that senior officials from Status of Women Canada appear no later than December 8, 2011, for 1 hour to respond to questions regarding their Agency’s Supplementary Estimates (B), that the senior officials' opening remarks not exceed ten minutes, and that the senior officials' appearance be televised.

 

The Chair presented the Fourth Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

1. That after hearing from witnesses at the meeting scheduled for Thursday November 24, 2011, any remaining time be used to provide direction in respect to the study of the abuse of older women.

2. That no witnesses be invited for the meeting scheduled for Tuesday November 29, 2011, and that the time be used to read the draft report on the study of violence against Aboriginal women, should the report be ready for distribution to members.

3. That the draft report on the study of violence against Aboriginal women be considered at the meeting scheduled for Thursday December 1, 2011.

 

It was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

At 3:56 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:56 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of abuse of older women.
 

Patricia Fleischmann made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:40 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:42 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Jared Buhler, Isobel Fitzpatrick and Isabelle Coady made statements and, with Leslie Craig, answered questions.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
