NEWS RELEASE

HOUSE OF COMMONS COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TO TRAVEL IN MAY 2012 IN RELATION TO STUDY REGARDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NATIONAL CONSERVATION PLAN

Ottawa, April 23, 2012 -

Members of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development will be travelling to British Columbia and Alberta, from May 13-17, 2012; and to Nova Scotia, from May 27-29, 2012, as part of its study to provide recommendations to the Minister of the Environment on the development a National Conservation Plan (NCP).

In January 2012, the Committee passed a motion to undertake the study, which began with several meetings in Ottawa in March and April 2012. Government departments and various other stakeholders gave testimony before the Committee.

The Committee feels that it is important to reach out to Canadians across the country to involve them in the creation of the NCP. Accordingly, as a second part of the study, the Committee will travel to various communities to observe a range of conservation activities and hear from more stakeholders whose on‐the-ground efforts are addressing a wide number of issues in various ecosystem types across the country. Members will also visit conservation sites and projects to see projects carried out.

The Committee looks forward to hearing from the people directly involved in conservation efforts. Public hearings will be held in the following communities:

• Tuesday, May 15, 2012: Vancouver (British Columbia) 8:30 – 14:30; Delta Vancouver Airport, 3500 Cessna Drive;

• Thursday, May 17, 2012: Calgary (Alberta) 9:00 – 16:00; Delta Bow Valley, 209-4th Avenue SE;

• Tuesday, May 29, 2012: Halifax (Nova Scotia) 9:00 – 15:00; Altlantica Hotel Halifax, 1980 Robie Street.
