The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 10:59 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, the Hon. Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Ron Cannan, Don Davies, Russ Hiebert, Ed Holder, Gerald Keddy, Hon. Rob Merrifield, Marc-André Morin, Annick Papillon, Jasbir Sandhu, Bev Shipley and Devinder Shory.

 

Acting Members present: Lise St-Denis for Hon. Wayne Easter.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: June Dewetering, Chief, Macroeconomics and Trade.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Ian Burney, Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade Policy and Negotiations Branch; Phil Calvert, Director General, North Asia Bureau; Marvin Hildebrand, Director General, Trade Negotiations Bureau; Dany M. Carrière, Director, Trade Policy and Negotiations II Division; Shenjie Chen, Head, Research Projects Unit, Office of the Chief Economist. Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Denis Landreville, Lead Negotiator, Regional Agreements, Trade Negotiations Division, Trade Agreements and Negotiations Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, the Committee commenced its study of a Canada-Japan bilateral trade agreement.
 

Ian Burney made a statement and, with Denis Landreville, Shenjie Chen and Phil Calvert, answered questions.

 

At 12:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:34 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the Order adopted on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, the Committee’s meeting with the delegation of Members of the European Parliament on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, be informal.

 

It was agreed, — That in relation to the study of a Canada-Japan bilateral trade agreement, the proposed budget in the amount of $13,700, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That in relation to the study of a Canada-Japan bilateral trade agreement, the proposed budget in the amount of $169,241.70, for the Committee’s travel to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, Japan, in June 2012, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That, from June 9 to 16, 2012, in relation to its study on a Canada-Japan bilateral trade agreement, six members of the Committee travel to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, Japan, and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee.

 

At 12:48 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
