The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 228, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Chris Warkentin, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Dennis Bevington, Ray Boughen, Rob Clarke, Jean Crowder, Jonathan Genest-Jourdain, Carol Hughes, Brent Rathgeber, Greg Rickford, Kyle Seeback and Chris Warkentin.

 

In attendance: Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development: Norah Kielland, Analyst; Tonina Simeone.

 

Witnesses: Mohawk Council of Akwesasne: Brian David, Acting-Grand Chief; Jim Ransom, Director, Tehotiiennawakon; Micha Menczer, Legal Counsel. Canadian Bar Association: Christopher Devlin, Executive Member, National Aboriginal Law Section; Terry Hancock, Lawyer, Legislation and Law Reform. Blood Tribe/Kainai: Dorothy First Rider, Councillor; Charles Weaselhead, Chief. Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations: Craig Makinaw, Grand Chief; Laurelle White, Legal Counsel. Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta: Rose Laboucan, Chief; Roland Twinn, Grand Chief. Canadian Environmental Law Association: Ramani Nadarajah, Counsel.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, May 8, 2013, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill S-8, An Act respecting the safety of drinking water on First Nation lands.
 

Chief Brian David, Jim Ransom, Micha J. Menczer, Chief Charles Weaselhead, Grand Chief Craig Makinaw, Grand Chief Roland Twinn and Chief Rose Laboucan made statements, and with Laurelle White and Dorothy First Rider, answered questions.

 

At 10:03 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:09 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Terry Hancock, Christopher Devlin and Ramani Nadarajah made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:54 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
