The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 9:34 a.m. this day, in the Room Borduas, Loews Hôtel Le Concorde, Québec, Québec, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Lois Brown, Nicole Demers and Hon. Hedy Fry.

 

Acting Members present: Carol Hughes for Irene Mathyssen and Roger Pomerleau for Luc Desnoyers.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst. House of Commons: Simon Larouche, Committee Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador: Grand Chief Anne Archambault. As an individual: Renée Brassard, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, Université Laval. Quebec Native Women Inc.: Mélanie Denis-Damée, Provincial Representative Substitute Representative, Council for Young Women. Huron-Wendat First Nation Council: Ann Desnoyers, Social Worker, Health, Leisure and Social Services Department; Guy Duchesneau, Social Services Coordinator, Health, Leisure and Social Services Department. Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador: Stéphane Savard, Suicide and Family Violence Prevention Counsellor, First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of violence against Aboriginal women.
 

The Committee proceeded to a round table discussion.

 

Grand Chief Anne Archambault, Renée Brassard, Mélanie Denis-Damée, Guy Duchesneau and Ann Desnoyers made statements and, with Stéphane Savard, answered questions.

 

At 11:00 a.m., Nicole Demers took the Chair.

 

At 12:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
