The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 4:26 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Dean Allison, Paul Dewar, Jean Dorion, Peter Goldring, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry and Dave Van Kesteren.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger for Hon. Bob Rae, Louis Plamondon for Johanne Deschamps and Borys Wrzesnewskyj for Glen Douglas Pearson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with the Rights & Democracy 2010 John Humphrey Award Winner, Marino Alvarado, Executive Director of Venezuela's PROVEA (Venezuelan Program of Education Action in Human Rights); and that the Clerk make the necessary arrangements for a hospitality luncheon in his honour on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, in the Parliamentary Restaurant, with members of the Committee, representatives of Rights & Democracy, and an interpreter.

 

It was agreed, — That members of the Committee be invited to a meeting of the Genocide Prevention Group to be held on Thursday, December 9, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., in Room 208, West Block, in order to meet with representatives of the Columbian National Indigenous Organization (ONIC).

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hold an informal meeting with a delegation from the Inter-Parliamentary Unit of the Saudi Arabian Majlis Al-Shoura (Consultative Council), the week of December 6, 2010.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hold an informal meeting with Conrad Sauvé, Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Red Cross, on Tuesday, December 14, 2010.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study the challenges in the aftermath of the 2010 disaster in Haiti, as well as examine Canadian and international responses to this and other complex emergencies in the Caribbean region.

 

It was agreed, — That members of the Committee be invited to meet with Mustafa Dzhemiliev, Chairman of the Mejlis (Parliament) of the Crimean Tatar People and Ukrainian Member of Parliament, on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at a meeting of the Executive of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group, to be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., in Room 238-S, Centre Block.

 

At 4:52 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
