The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met by videoconference at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen St., the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Paul Calandra, Olivia Chow, Hon. Denis Coderre, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Thierry St-Cyr, Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac, David Tilson, Alice Wong and Terence Young.

 

Associate Members present: Alexandra Mendes.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Elgersma, Analyst; Daphne Keevil Harrold, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Council for Refugees: Wanda Yamamoto, President; Janet Dench, Executive Director. Amnesty International: Claudette Cardinal, Coordinator, Refugees, Canadian Francophone Section; Michael Bossin, Past President, Refugee Network. As an individual: James Bissett, Former Ambassador, Former Executive Director, Canadian Immigration Service. Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI): Amy Casipullai, Coordinator, Policy and Public Education. Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic: Salimah Valiani, Coordinator, Colour of Poverty. Canadian Bar Association: Kerri Froc, Staff Lawyer, Law Reform and Equality; Mitchell Goldberg, Executive Member, Citizenship and Immigration Law Section.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, April 29, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Federal Courts Act.
 

Wanda Yamamoto, Janet Dench, Claudette Cardinal, Michael Bossin, James Bissett and Amy Casipullai, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Salimah Valiani, Kerri Froc and Mitchell Goldberg, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:16 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
