AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE TO TRAVEL ACROSS CANADA TO MEET WITH YOUNG FARMERS
Ottawa, April 23, 2010 -
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food will be travelling to Ontario, from 3-4 May 2010; and Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, from May 10-14, for the purposes of meeting with young farmers and discussing with them the future of farming.
The Committee will be consulting with farmers on how to better share information, promote the farming profession and provide training. The Committee wants to know how government can improve what it does to keep young farmers in the industry. The Committee wants to hear directly from the farmers about ways to improve the profitability of farming for this generation and the next.
“Agriculture is important to our rural economies and young farmers are the future of this key sector," said Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound and Chair of the Committee. “We want to hear the opinions of young producers on where agriculture in Canada needs to go to attract and retain young farmers,” said Chair Miller.
The tour will include visits to farms and processing plants in various parts of the country, where the Committee members will have the opportunity to speak to young farmers and see many of the sectors of agriculture first hand.
Pursuant to House of Commons regulations, taking photographs before and after the meeting is permissible, but the meeting cannot be filmed or photographed.
