The Standing Committee on National Defence met in camera at 9:13 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Hon. Maxime Bernier, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Maxime Bernier, Ray Boughen, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Laurie Hawn, Hon. Anita Neville, Pascal-Pierre Paillé, LaVar Payne and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Peter Braid for Steven Blaney and Alan Tonks for Hon. Denis Coderre.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolfgang Koerner, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the following person be invited to appear before the Committee as part of its study on Arctic Sovereignty:

--Pita Aatami, President, or a representative of the Makivik Corporation.

 

It was agreed, — That the following people be invited to appear before the Committee as part of its study on Arctic Sovereignty:

--Captain Christopher Hearn, Director, Centre for Marine Simulation, School of Maritime Studies, Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University;

--A representative from Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami;

--A representative from Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.;

--John Amagoalik of Qikqitani Inuit Association.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee continue to hear witnesses as part of its study on Arctic Sovereignty until Thanksgiving 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee’s study on recruitment, which was agreed to on March 11, 2009, be amended to include issues related to retention.

 

It was agreed, — That the Department of National Defence be requested to provide a one-hour briefing on the security preparations for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of National Defence to appear before the Committee for two hours on any of the following dates: September 29, October 1, October 6 or October 8; in order to discuss any issue related to his portfolio, as well as the following specific issues: procurement, Afghanistan, Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue and the Canadian Arctic.

 

At 9:48 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
