The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 214, Wellington Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Josée Beaudin, Dona Cadman, Ron Cannan, Raymonde Folco, Ed Komarnicki, Ben Lobb, Hon. Maria Minna and Maurice Vellacott.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Larry Bagnell for Michael John Savage, Olivia Chow for Tony Martin, Bob Dechert for Ed Komarnicki and Richard Nadeau for Yves Lessard.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Hilary Jensen, Analyst; Kevin Kerr, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada: Jody Dallaire, Chairperson. Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action: Leilani Farha, Member of the Steering Committee. Canadian Paediatric Society: Andrew Lynk, Chair, Action Committee for Children and Teens.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 12:34 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:38 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That in relation to its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada, 6 members of the Committee travel to:

• Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver from April 26 to 30, 2009;

• Halifax, Moncton and Montreal from May 10 to 14, 2009;

• Toronto from June 1 to 2, 2009; and

That the necessary staff do accompany the Committee.

That the proposed budget in the amount of $112,849, for travel to Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver from April 26 to 30, 2009 in relation to its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee;

That the proposed budget in the amount of $75,883, for travel to Halifax, Moncton and Montreal from May 10 to 14, 2009 in relation to its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee;

That the proposed budget in the amount of $38,269, for travel to Toronto from June 1 to 2, 2009 in relation to its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That in relation to its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada, the Committee authorize 6 of its members to attend the Canadian Social Forum in Calgary, from May 20 to 22, 2009.

That the proposed budget in the amount of $7,738 for 6 members of the Committee to attend the Canadian Social Forum in Calgary in relation to its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada, from May 20 to 22, 2009 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 12:48 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
