The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joyce Murray, Joy Smith and Tim Uppal.

 

Associate Members present: Carol Hughes.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada: Alicia Sarabia, Section Head, Medical Microbiology, The Credit Valley Hospital. Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion: Vivek Goel, President and Chief Executive Officer; Don Low, Medical Director, Public Health Laboratories. University of Calgary: Michael F. Hynes, Professor, Department of Biological Sciences. Institut national de la recherche scientifique: Albert Descoteaux, Professor, Institut Armand-Frappier.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, February 23, 2009, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-11, An Act to promote safety and security with respect to human pathogens and toxins.
 

Alicia Sarabia, Vivek Goel, Michael F. Hynes and Albert Descoteaux made openings statements and, with Don Low, answered questions.

 

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:18 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the clause by clause meeting on Bill C-11 scheduled for Thursday, March 12, 2009 be amended, and that the meeting be on hearing more witnesses.

 

It was agreed, — That the Officials from the Public Health Agency of Canada be recalled to re-appear before the Committee.

 

At 5:19 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
