The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joyce Murray, Joy Smith, Tim Uppal and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

Acting Members present: Rod Bruinooge for Patrick Brown, Louis Plamondon for Nicolas Dufour and Bruce Stanton for Patrick Brown.

 

Associate Members present: Carol Hughes.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Blood Pressure Canada: Norman Campbell, President; Kevin Willis, Director of Partnerships, Canadian Stroke Network. Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association: Ron Reaman, Vice-President, Federal; Joyce Reynolds, Executive Vice-President, Government Affairs. Centre for Science in the Public Interest: Bill Jeffery, National Coordinator. Food and Consumer Products of Canada: Phyllis Tanaka, Vice-President, Scientific and Regulatory Affairs (Food Policy). University of Toronto: Mary L'Abbé, Earle W. McHenry Professor, Chair, Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine. Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions: Linda Silas, President; Amanda Crupi, Research Officer. Canadian Medical Association: Anne Doig, President; Samuel Shortt, Director, Knowledge Transfer and Practice Policy. Canadian Nurses Association: Rachel Bard, Chief Executive Officer; Della Faulkner, Nurse Consultant, Public Policy. The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 16,500, for the briefing on sodium consumption in the Canadian diet be adopted.

 

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on sodium consumption in the Canadian diet.
 

Norman Campbell, Kevin Willis, Ron Reaman, Joyce Reynolds, Bill Jeffery, Phyllis Tanaka and Mary L'Abbé made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of H1N1 preparedness and response.
 

Linda Silas, Anne Doig, Samuel Shortt, Rachel Bard, Della Faulkner and John Maxted made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:27 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:29 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That on October 19, 2009 the Committee examine the issue of vaccines in relation to its study on H1N1 preparedness and response and that members submit their suggested witnesses for this meeting to the Clerk, no later than Wednesday, October 7, 2009.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
