The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joyce Murray, Joy Smith, Tim Uppal and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst; Trina Wall, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 3:36 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:37 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 4:47 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:57 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That all committee meetings until October 28, 2009 be devoted to the study on H1N1 preparedness and response except for the October 5, 2009 meeting which will be devoted to the study on the health implications of the supply of radioisotopes.

 

It was agreed, — That on September 28, 2009, the Minister of Health appear before the Committee with the results of her inquiry into the reports of Canada's shipment of body bags to First Nations communities in Manitoba's Island Region and on H1N1 preparedness and response along with Dr. Paul Gully and officials from the Public Health Agency of Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That on September 30, 2009 the Committee hear from officials who are best suited to provide substantive insight and information on the state of pandemic preparedness for the Parliamentary Precinct and for the core public administration in relation to its study on H1N1 preparedness and response.

 

It was agreed, — That on October 19, 2009, medical stakeholders be invited as witnesses in relation to the Committee's study on H1N1 preparedness and response.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee voice its concerns about reports of body bags being shipped by Health Canada to First Nations communities in Manitoba's Island Lake Region, and that this be reported to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee recommend that the Government of Canada and all parties voice their support and defend Canada’s public health care system, and that this be reported to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That on November 4, 2009, the Committee devote its meeting to examine the health implications of animals being transported in the passenger compartments of airplanes, and that the Committee report its recommendations in this regard to the House upon the conclusion of its study.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
