The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joyce Murray, Joy Smith, Tim Uppal and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Hedy Fry for Kirsty Duncan and Brad Trost for Patrick Brown.

 

Associate Members present: Carol Hughes.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: University of Ottawa Heart Institute: Rob S. B. Beanlands, Director, National Cardiac PET Centre, Chief of Cardiac Imaging; Terrence D. Ruddy, Professor, Medicine and Radiology, Chief of Radiology, Director of Nuclear Cardiology. University of Western Ontario: Albert Driedger, Emeritus Professor. Quebec Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists: François Lamoureux, President. As an individual: Alexander McEwan, Special Advisor on Medical Isotopes to the Minister of Health. Canadian Association of Nuclear Medicine: Jean-Luc Urbain, President.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $5, 500, for the study of health implications of the supply of radioisotopes be adopted.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the health implications of the supply of radioisotopes.
 

Rob S. B. Beanlands, Terrence D. Ruddy, Jean-Luc Urbain, François Lamoureux, Albert Driedger and Sandy McEwan made opening statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
