The Report read as follows:
Your Subcommittee met on February 5, 2009 to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:
1. That the Committee proceed with the workplan outlined below in order of priority.
2. That the Committee proceed to a study of the European legislative or regulatory actions targeting the Canadian seal harvest. The study would include a briefing on recent developments at the European Parliament and hearing from representatives of the recent Canadian delegation to Europe.
3. That the Committee proceed to a study of the current situation in the lobster fishery. The Committee would hear from fishermen, fishermen associations, buyers and Department of Fisheries and Oceans managers. The study would include travel to Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Magdalen Islands at the end of March or the first week of April. A short report should be considered and possibly tabled in the House before the beginning of the fishing season in May.
4. That the Committee complete the study of Small Craft Harbours that was started in the 39th Parliament by preparing the final report. The report would be considered by the Committee after the April recess weeks.
5. That the Committee study the proposed amendments to the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization Convention.
6. That the Committee begin an in-depth study of the aquaculture industry across the country.
7. That the Committee begin a study of the sustainable development of Arctic Fisheries.
8. That the Committee study the impact of the current financial situation on the fishing industry, particularly with respect to access to credit.
