The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 306, West Block, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Scott Andrews, Raynald Blais, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Blaine Calkins, Randy Kamp, Yvon Lévesque, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Peter Stoffer, Dave Van Kesteren, John Weston and Rodney Weston.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the Atlantic lobster fishery.
 

At 11:18 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

 

Gerry Byrne moved, — That the following be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity:

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans recommends that the government restore full funding to the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation to enable this organisation and its partners to pursue its mission to make available to the fishing industry the largest and best equipped body of experts in fisheries-related science and technology in the country for the benefit of the industry's long-term competitiveness and sustainability.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Dave Van Kesteren moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting all the words after the word “government” and by adding the following: “reconsider its decision to discontinue funding to the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation, recognizing its mission to make available to the fishing industry the largest and best equipped body of experts in fisheries-related science and technology in the country for the benefit of the industry's long-term competitiveness and sustainability”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

John Weston moved, — That the amendment be amended by adding the words “within fifteen (15) days” after the word “government”.

After debate, the question was put on the subamendment of John Weston and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Dave Van Kesteren and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 12:23 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 12:46 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
