The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Candice Hoeppner, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Hon. Anita Neville, Dave Van Kesteren, Alice Wong and Lise Zarac.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Bob Baldwin, Consultant. University of Toronto: Lynn McDonald, Professor, Faculty of Social Work, Director of the Institute for Life Course and Aging.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Anita Neville moved, — That the Committee request that the Minister of State (Status of Women Canada) appear before the Committee before December 7, 2009, on the subject of the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2009-2010 and that the Committee would be prepared to accommodate her availability.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

Cathy McLeod moved, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 29, 2009, that the Committee prioritize the study on non-traditional work, and that the pension study be postponed until next year.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, the motion was withdrawn.

 

Anita Neville moved, — That, given the recent concerns expressed in media by the Vancouver Police Department and given the fact that the Vancouver Winter Olympics are only 78 days away, the Committee recall those witnesses who appeared before the Committee on Thursday, June 11, 2009 and invite representatives from the Vancouver Police Department to determine: that the measures and initiatives put in place to curtail human trafficking are adequate and appropriately funded; and to determine what further measures are required to ensure that the appropriate authorities are successful in curtailing human trafficking during the Vancouver Olympic Games.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

On motion of Sylvie Boucher, it was agreed, — That the Clerk, in consultation with the Chair, provide a seasonal working meal for the meeting on Thursday, December 10, 2009.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 1, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of women and pension security.
 

At 4:22 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:23 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Bob Baldwin and Lynn McDonald made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
