Meeting No. 32

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Irene Mathyssen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Hon. Anita Neville, Dave Van Kesteren, Alice Wong and Lise Zarac.

Acting Members present: Bruce Stanton for Candice Hoeppner.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst ; Lara Trehearne, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of Human Resources and Skills Development: Thomas Shepherd, Director, Retirement and Aging Division; Dominique La Salle, Director General, Seniors and Pensions Policy Secretariat; Heather Bordeleau, Director, Canada Pension Plan, Policy and Legislation; Nathalie Martel, Director, Old Age Security Policy.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 1, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of women and pension security.

At 3:40 p.m. the Hon. Hedy Fry took the Chair.

Dominique La Salle and Thomas Shepherd made a statement and, with Heather Bordeleau and Nathalie Martel, answered questions.

At 5:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

Nicole Demers moved, — That the Committee call on the government to follow-up on the reports of both Amnesty International and the United Nations regarding the hundreds of young Aboriginal women who have disappeared or been killed over the past 30 years in Canada and that the Committee report this motion to the House as soon as possible.

Debate arose thereon.

It was agreed, — That the Amnesty International and the United Nations reports be distributed to Committee members before deciding on the motion.

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
