The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Kevin A.Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Lois Brown, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Jean Dorion for Francine Lalonde, Hon. John McKay for Glen Douglas Pearson and John Weston for Peter Goldring.

 

Other Members present: Francis Scarpaleggia.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: MiningWatch Canada: Catherine Coumans, Research Coordinator and Asia Pacific Program. Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability: Richard Janda, Professor, McGill University; Rachel Doran, Research Assistant, Faculty of Law, McGill University. Mining Association of Canada: Gordon Peeling, President and Chief Executive Officer.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, April 22, 2009, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-300, An Act respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries.
 

Catherine Coumans and Richard Janda made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:47 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:49 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Gordon Peeling made a statement and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Deepak Obhrai, it was agreed, — That the Committee request an extension of thirty sitting days to consider Bill C-300, An Act respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries, beyond the sixty days from the date of the Bill's referral to the Committee, as provided in Standing Order 97.1(1); and that the continued study, clause by clause consideration and reporting of the Bill be completed by the end of the extension period.

 

At 10:53 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
