The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Lee Richardson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Ron Cannan, John Cannis, Serge Cardin, Claude Guimond, Richard M. Harris, Ed Holder, Peter Julian, Gerald Keddy, Lee Richardson and Mario Silva.

 

Acting Members present: Brian Murphy for Hon. Scott Brison.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Holden, Analyst. House of Commons: Carmen DePape, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Council of Chief Executives: David Stewart-Patterson, Executive Vice-President; Sam Boutziouvis, Vice-President, Economics and International Trade. Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters: Jean-Michel Laurin, Vice-President, Global Business Policy. Canadian Trucking Alliance: David Bradley, Chief Executive Officer; Ron Lennox, Vice-President, Trade and Security.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, March 5, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of Canada-United States Trade Relations.
 

David Bradley, David Stewart-Patterson and Jean-Michel Laurin made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:44 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:48 a.m., the Committee resumed sitting in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $39,907, for the Committee’s travel to Washington D.C. on April 26 to 28, 2009 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the following be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity:

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on International Trade recommends that the Government vigorously defend Quebec’s Pesticides Management Code in the case opposing Dow Agroscience and the Government of Canada in order to safeguard Quebec’s right to enact legislation and make regulations in the public interest.

 

At 11:02 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
