The Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities met at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Mervin Tweed, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Don H. Bell, Robert Carrier, Ed Fast, Brian Jean, Mario Laframboise, John Maloney, Brian Masse, Bev Shipley, Mervin Tweed, Hon. Joseph Volpe, Jeff Watson and Paul Zed.

 

Acting Members present: Rick Dykstra for Bev Shipley.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Analyst. Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities: Bibiane Ouellette, Clerk of the Committee.

 

Witnesses: Department of Transport: Marc Grégoire, Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security; David Osbaldeston, Manager, Navigable Waters Protection Program.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

That officials from the Department of Transport appear before the Committee on Thursday, February 28, 2008 with respect to the Navigable Waters Protection Act.

That the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities be invited to appear before the Committee with respect to the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2007-2008.

 

It was agreed, — That the Second Report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

It was agreed, — That the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities be invited to appear in relation to the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That officials from the departments of Environment, Fisheries and Oceans, Natural Ressources and Infrastructure be invited to appear in relation to the study of the current status of navigation protection of the Canadian waterways including their governance and use and the operation of the current Navigable Waters Protection Act.

 

It was agreed, — That a summary of rail safety discussions that have taken place before the Committee be distributed to Committee members.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on January 29, 2008, the Committee resumed its study of the current status of navigation protection of the Canadian waterways including their governance and use and the operation of the current Navigable Waters Protection Act.
 

Marc Grégoire made a statement and, with David Obalsdeston, answered questions.

 

At 12:53 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
