The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in camera at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Yvon Godin, Raymond Gravel, Luc Harvey, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be composed of the Chair, the two Vice-Chairs and a member of the other opposition party.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee on Official Languages complete its study on the cancellation of the court challenges program and table its report in the House of Commons at the earliest possible moment.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee of Official Languages invite the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, to appear before the Committee in order to discuss her state of affairs and future initiatives, after having heard from the Commissioner of Official Languages and having completed the work on the Court Challenges Program, unless the Committee wants to hear from Minister Verner in relation to her work on the Court Challenges Program.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee conduct a study of the situation of francophones on the Canadian Forces Base in Borden, Ontario.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee re-examine the Canada-Community Agreements to adjust them to the needs of the official languages minority communities.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee purchase 15 copies of the booklet "A Consolidation of the Constitution Acts 1867 to 1982" for distribution to the members of the Committee.

 

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
