The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, James Rajotte, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: André Arthur, Paule Brunelle, Colin Carrie, Hon. Mark Eyking, Hon. Dan McTeague, Peggy Nash, James Rajotte, Hon. Raymond Simard, Bruce Stanton, Dave Van Kesteren and Robert Vincent.

 

Associate Members present: Colin Mayes.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Eleanor Fast, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Industry: Richard Dicerni, Deputy Minister; Iain Stewart, Director General, Portfolio and Coordination Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 7, 2008, the Committee commenced its study of Canadian Science and Technology.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:21 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, the Committe's study of the proposed sale of part of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. to Alliant Techsystems, be suspended at this time.

 

The Chair presented the Third Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Tuesday April 1, 2008, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

It was agreed, that when a motion is adopted by the committee to receive testimony on a specific topic, the committee should make every effort to accommodate those meetings within the regularly scheduled meeting times. In order to provide the Chair with clear instructions to manage the work schedule of the committee, such motions should be specific and include information such as possible meeting dates as well as witnesses requested to appear on the topic.

It was agreed, that the committee work towards a shorter work plan for the study on science and technology, and that any additional suggested witness groups, or travel locations and site visits be sent to the clerk as soon as possible.

It was agreed, that the first meetings on the study of science and technology be scheduled for Thursday April 10, 2008, and Thursday April 17, 2008, and that the committee continue this study into the month of May.

It was agreed, that when additional groups request to appear before the committee, the scheduling of their possible appearance be left to the Chair’s discretion.

It was agreed, that in regards to the study on science and technology, the committee work towards confirming travel itineraries which include meetings for the purposes of receiving evidence as well as informal site visits, planned in two (2) or more short trips, scheduled on weekdays wherever possible.

It was agreed, that the committee work towards completing the draft report on Canada’s Service Sector at two meetings, scheduled for Tuesday April 8, 2008, and Tuesday April 15, 2008.

 

It was agreed, — That the Third Report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be adopted.

 

At 12:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
