The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Fabian Manning, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Raynald Blais, Blaine Calkins, Randy Kamp, Gerald Keddy, Yvon Lévesque, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Fabian Manning, Bill Matthews and Peter Stoffer.

 

Acting Members present: Sukh Dhaliwal for Scott Simms and Larry Miller for Mike Allen.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Hon. Patricia Carney, P.C., Senator (retired). Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Cal Hegge, Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources and Corporate Services; Krishna Sahay, Director General, Real Property, Safety and Security; Andrew Anderson, Sr Divestiture Analyst. Parks Canada Agency: Patricia E. Kell, Director, Policy and Government Relations Branch, National Historic Sites Directorate; Doug Tapley, Manager, Cabinet Affairs.

 

The Committee observed a minute of silence in memory of Bruno Bourque, Carl Aucoin, Gilles Leblanc and Marc-André Déraspe, seal hunters from Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, March 11, 2008, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill S-215, An Act to protect heritage lighthouses.
 

The Chair calls Clause 1.

 

Doug Tapley and Cal Hegge made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:02 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:08 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Hon. Patricia Carney made a statement and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That letters of condolence be sent to the families of the seal hunters that died.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $20,200 for the study of Bill S-215, An Act to protect heritage lighthouses be adopted.

 

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
