The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Hon. Raymond Chan, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, Wajid Khan, Denis Lebel, Hon. Keith Martin, Deepak Obhrai, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Marcel Proulx for Bernard Patry.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal; James Lee, Analyst; Natalie Mychajlyszyn, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 20, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 

At 5:19 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:20 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Deepak Obhrai moved, — That his motion to invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss the foreign policy priorities of the Government of Canada be moved to the top of the list and be debated.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 8; NAYS: 3.

 

Deepak Obhrai moved, — That pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2) the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss the foreign policy priorities of the Government of Canada.

 

Paul Dewar moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “Canada” the following: “and report back to the House whether this Committee has confidence in the Minister”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Paul Dewar and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 1; NAYS: 10.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 8; NAYS: 3.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
