The Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Robert Carrier, Ed Fast, Brian Jean, Peter Julian, Mario Laframboise, Brian Storseth, Merv Tweed, Hon. Joseph Volpe, Jeff Watson and Paul Zed.

 

Acting Members present: Sukh Dhaliwal for Don H. Bell.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Analyst; Allison Padova, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Peter Julian moved, — That the Committee inquire into the failure of the security system at the Toronto International Airport that occurred on October 10 and 11, 2006, and that the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities be invited to appear to discuss the renewal of the Garda World Security Corp contract for the Toronto International Airport.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 4.

 

At 3:57 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:00 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

The Chair presented the third Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Monday, February 5, 2007, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. The Subcommittee recommends that the Committee commence the study on Bill C-6 at the meeting on Monday, February 12, 2007 with the appearance by the Minister of Transport, Infrasrtucture and Communities, if available, and department officials.

2. The Subcommittee further recommends that, regarding its study on rail safety, department officials along with representatives from CN and CP be invited to appear and that a subsequent meeting be held with other witnesses (rail workers, local elected officials and other stakeholders).

3. The Subcommittee further recommends that the meeting with Canada Post be televised if possible.

It was agreed, — That the witnesses appearing in relation to the study on Canada Post be sworn in.
