The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Brian Fitzpatrick, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David Christopherson, Brian Fitzpatrick, Jean-Yves Laforest, Mike Lake, Pierre Poilievre, Jean-Yves Roy, Hon. Judy Sgro, David Sweet, John Williams and Borys Wrzesnewskyj.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. John McCallum for Hon. Shawn Murphy and Anthony Rota for Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lydia Scratch, Analyst; Alex Smith, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Claude Drouin.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(g), the Committee commenced consideration of Chapter 7, Acquisition of Leased Office Space of the May 2006 Report of the Auditor General of Canada referred to the Committee on May 16, 2006.
 

Mr. Claude drouin made an opening statement and answered questions.

 

Pierre Poilievre moved, — That the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee write a letter to the current Clerk of the Privy Council to inquire about the information given by Mr. Pelletier at his last appearance before this Committee when he spoke of a Privy Council request that he look into a donation to the Liberal Party of Canada, and that the letter just ask what records there are of this information and also what explanation the bureaucrats at that department can provide explaining why it was involved in such partisan activity.

Debate arose thereon.

 

John Williams moved, — That the motion be amended by adding the following: “and also why the Privy Council was aware of a bank account, of the content of a bank account and who was depositing, and what was being deposited to that account”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 

Jean-Yves Laforest moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee address the report by the Auditor General of Canada presented on June 12, 2007, and undertake a study of the issues it raises by inviting the following to appear:

-The Auditor General of Quebec, Renaud Lachance,

-Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada,

-Lise Thibault, the former Lieutenant-Governor of Québec.

Debate arose thereon.

 

On motion of Borys Wrzesnewskyj, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding the following person to the list: “The Office manager who would be in charge of the expenses of the Lieutenant-governor’s Office”.

 

David Christopherson moved, — That the motion be further amended by removing the following person from the list: “Lise Thibault, the former Lieutenant-Governor of Québec”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 5:36 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
