The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Robert Bouchard, Blaine Calkins, Rick Casson, Cheryl Gallant, Laurie Hawn, Russ Hiebert and Hon. Joe McGuire.

 

Acting Members present: David Christopherson for Dawn Black and Hon. John McCallum for Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Council for International Co operation: Gerry Barr, President and Chief Executive Officer. CARE Canada: Kevin McCort, Senior Vice-President, Operations. Canadian Council for International Co operation: Erin Simpson, Policy Officer (peace and conflict), Peace, Security and Development. Polaris Institute: Steven Staples, Director, Security Programs.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Joe McGuire, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget to support the Committee's study of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan in the amount of $19,750, for the period of May 16 to October 31, 2006, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

On motion of Russ Hiebert, it was agreed, — That, pursuant to the motion adopted Tuesday, May 16, 2006, and in relation to its study on the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, the Standing Committee on National Defence travel to National Defence Headquarters on June 15, 2006, and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 16, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.
 

Steven Staples, Kevin McCort and Gerry Barr made statements and, with Erin Simpson, answered questions.

 

Claude Bachand took the Chair.

 

Cheryl Gallant moved, — That the Committee do now adjourn.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 3.

 

At 4:42 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
