The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:03 this day, in Room 307, West Block.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Luc Harvey, Pierre Lemieux, Luc Malo, Richard Nadeau and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Raymond Simard for Brian Murphy.

 

Other Members present: Michel Guimond.

 

In attendance: Parliamentary Information and Research Service: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Lafrance, Committee Clerk.

 
The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Pierre Lemieux, it was agreed, — That Steven Blaney be elected Chair of the Committee.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Richard Nadeau moved, — That the Committee hold four meetings (or more, if needed) on the subject of the Court Challenges Program, including representatives of Anglophone organizations in Quebec, one meeting with the Commissioner of Official Languages, to be held by June 7, 2007 at the latest, one meeting with the Minister responsible for la Francophonie and Official Languages, and one meeting with la Société Nationale de l'Acadie, and with la Société Radio-Canada.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Pierre Lemieux moved, — That all the words following “Acadie” be deleted.

At 10:18, the sitting was suspended.

At 10:23, the sitting resumed.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Pierre Lemieux and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 6.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 10:25, the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
