The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Guy Lauzon, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Luc Harvey, Guy Lauzon, Pierre Lemieux, Luc Malo, Brian Murphy, Richard Nadeau and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

Associate Members present: Peter Julian.

 

Other Members present: Michel Guimond.

 

In attendance: Parliamentary Information and Research Service: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the request by four (4) members of the Committee that a meeting be called to discuss the government's decision to cancel the Court Challenges Program.
 
The Committee resumed to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Yvon Godin moved, — That the Chair of the Standing Committee on Official Languages, Mr. Guy Lauzon, be relieved of his duties as Chair following a decision made on his own accord to cancel the scheduled May 8, 2007 meeting of the Committee which was to study the issue of the Court Challenges Program; therefore, the Chair acted against the will of the Committee and overstepped his role as Chair and as a consequence, he has lost the confidence of the Committee.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Luc Malo, Brian Murphy, Richard Nadeau, Pablo Rodriguez — 7; NAYS: Sylvie Boucher, Michael D. Chong, Luc Harvey, Pierre Lemieux — 4.

 

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Chair.

 

Richard Nadeau moved, — That Michael D. Chong be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

After debate, the motion was withdrawn.

 

Raymonde Folco moved, — That Luc Harvey be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

After debate, the motion was withdrawn.

 

Richard Nadeau moved, — That Pierre Lemieux be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

After debate, the motion was withdrawn.

 

Jean-Claude D'Amours moved, — That Sylvie Boucher be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

After debate, the motion was withdrawn.

 

At 10:28 a.m., the members of the Committee dispersed.
