The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Bonnie Brown, Patrick Brown, Hon. Denis Coderre, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Russ Hiebert, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Hon. Geoff Regan and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Libby Davies for Tony Martin and Carole Lavallée for France Bonsant.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Analyst. House of Commons: Marc Toupin, Legislative Clerk.

 

Witnesses: House of Commons: Richard Nadeau, M.P., Gatineau, Gatineau.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 25, 2006, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-257, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (replacement workers).
 

The witness made a statement.

 

Mike Lake moved, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted on November 23, that six (6) additional meetings be added to hear witnesses on December 12 and on the first five scheduled Committee meetings following the Christmas adjournment.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Libby Davies moved, — That the motion be deferred until such a time as we have heard the initial witnesses, so the committee can determine if additional hearings are required.

 

The Chair ruled the proposed amendment inadmissible as it introduced a new proposition that should be moved as a substantive motion, as provided on page 453 of House of Commons Procedure and Practice.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:YEAS: Patrick Brown, Russ Hiebert, Mike Lake, Lynne Yelich — 4; NAYS: Bonnie Brown, Denis Coderre, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Libby Davies, Carole Lavallée, Yves Lessard, Geoff Regan — 7.

 

The witness resumed his presentation and answered questions.

 

At 12:46 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
